Peter has been working professionally as a guitarist, composer, arranger, clinician, and teacher for over 20 years, in both the Atlantic and Western regions of Canada.
Based in Calgary for the past 10 years, working as both a leader and sideman, Peter has performed with a number of Alberta’s foremost jazz musicians in a variety of settings and venues. In addition to a seasoned repertoire from the classic jazz tradition, he has a growing body of original and contemporary compositions.
After attending the St. Francis Xavier University Jazz Studies Program in Antigonish, Nova Scotia from 1980-1983, Peter added a number of professional accomplishments to his résumé including:
- Two-time band-leader/composer for the Alcan National Jazz Competition
- Recorded performances and broadcasts on CBC’s national “Jazzbeat” program
- Performances with a number of Canada’s leading jazz musicians, including Edmonton’s P.J. Perry and Sandro Dominelli, Vancouver’s Hugh Fraser, and Toronto’s Mike Murley, George Koller, and Jim Vivian.
Festival performing credits include:
- The Halifax International Jazz Festival
- Several appearances at the Calgary International Jazz Festival
- C-Jazz Festival Calgary
- Sylvan Lake’s “Jazz on the Lake” Festival.
A further performance credit of note was a two-night appearance at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in the fall of 2007 with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, appearing in the rhythm section accompanying Canadian Celtic violin virtuoso Frank Lehey.
In the fall of 2008, Peter was awarded an Alberta Foundation for the Arts grant, and has recently completed a recording of contemporary original jazz that is due to be released in the coming months titled “Up All Night”.
Currently entering his 10th year as a guitar instructor at Calgary’s long established “deWaal Music Studio”, Peter continues to perform, compose, teach, and study music.
