Carl Janzen is a professional freelance guitarist who is known for his versatility. He is versed in many styles including: Rock/Pop/Blues/Jazz/R&B/Folk/Country/Bluegrass/Classical. He has been playing the guitar for over 15 years and is also proficient on other instruments such as bass guitar, mandolin, ukulele and the 5-string Banjo.
With over 10 years of performing, recording and teaching experience, Carl is comfortable in any musical situation whether he be on the concert stage, the studio or the classroom. From his humble beginnings of playing in school jazz bands and assembling rock bands with his fellow students to being a current in-demand freelance musician playing everything from wedding ceremonies to private parties to sold-out performances and Juno nominated recordings, Carl has enjoyed each and every step along his musical journey. His playing has been featured on numerous platforms including radio (CKUA, CJSW) and television (MuchMusic, CityTV, Shaw TV).
He graduated from the Mount Royal University Music Performance program in 2009 while earning several scholarships to aid in his studies. Prior to studying at Mount Royal he was awarded with the John de Waal/Giuseppe Spoletini Music Scholarship in 2004. He has also had the opportunity to attend several jazz workshops with world renown instructors such as saxophone giant Ralph Bowen and guitar legend John Abercrombie, which has aided him greatly in developing his jazz vocabulary and musical chops.
Always eager to share and explore music with enthusiastic students, Carl is looking forward to his first year teaching for the de Waal Music Studio.
